Donne said that the Sidneian Psalms "teach us how to sing," yet Philip's psalms failed to draw the attention of composers. Scholars have long believed they were not written for singing, despite three of them appearing as singing translations of the French metrical psalter in 1632. I propose that Sidney found poetic and musical models in the French psalter, which he and Mary knew intimately from their Huguenot tutor, and the French Protestant Church abutting their London home. "Philip Sidney died in 1586 without publishing any of his now-revered poetry, including the first forty-three psalms, with the rest completed afterwards by his sister Mary, Countess of Pembroke. Mary published Philip's other works in 1598, but their joint psalter remained unpublished until 1823, circulating in coveted manuscript copies, and earning the admiration of the poet John Donne, among others. Donne said that the Sidneian Psalms "teach us how to sing," yet Philip's psalms failed to draw the attention of composers. Scholars have long believed they were not written for singing, despite three of them appearing as singing translations of the French metrical psalter in 1632.
